3 out of 5 stars Lens works great.. just not with my camera.   July 26, 2010
J. Norton
picture quality was great, I wouldn't expect anything less from Nikon, however I sold it almost as soon as I got it because it did not auto focus with my D5000. Seller was awesome though.. he was willing to go against his own return policy for me if I hadn't resold it my self. Would definitely do business with again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lens for the Price.   July 3, 2010

This is a good lens for the price. Great for outdoor photography. Using on a Nikon D50.

Please note this lens Auto Focus system is not compatible with NIKON D40, NIKON D60, NIKON D3000, and Nikon D5000.
This lens will fit above models, the focus system will only work manually.

4 out of 5 stars Few Compromises   June 20, 2010

The Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens is a very capable performer, given the price point and focal reach of the lens. Yes, it is a plastic lens, and, yes, it is a cheap lens. However, this lens is nothing to scoff at; it can take really sharp pictures when stopped down. The real trick to getting this zoom to do the shots that you want it to, is with either stabilization (meaning tripod, monopod, etc.) or lighting (if your subject is well lit, you are good to go).

Truth is, I don't often shoot at the long end of this range, so I don't wind up using this lens all that often. But, its reach has got me out of some jams, and it is the perfect walking around lens for the zoo and such. Plus, the fact that it is all plastic means that it is super lightweight, and really, for under $200, it truly has no true peers.

4 out of 5 stars Great lense   June 8, 2010

For the price, how can you beat this lens? And the weight is awesome for shooting freehand or carrying all day in a bag as well! I take little league baseball pictures and have no problem getting 1/1600-2000 sec. shots just before dusk, which is more than ample. I would not recommend it for night games. The 300 zoom (450 in reality) is great in theory. I do find that the picture deteriorates in focus nearer to 300 mm (which is common on cheaper lenses), the only reason I did not give it 5 stars. Up to 200 mm however, it is crisp and clear so I just tend to stay in that range for more important pictures. At 300 it is not all that bad either (much better than a crop!), so that option remains available!!

If you are on a rather tight budget (who is not these days?), take midlevel pictures, and need a telephoto lens to carry around: BUY THIS ONE. I was pleasantly surprised!! Measuring satisfaction vs. dollars, this was a great find!!
