Ultra-Portable Data Shuttle
If you travel a lot with your data, the Rugged All-Terrain is the drive is for you. Perfect for users who need backup, storage and large-volume exchange for office files, photos, music and even video clips, the Rugged All-Terrain is powered by the FireWire or USB connection, which means that it uses the power of the connected computer to operate and doesn't require an additional AC adapter or power cord.

The Rugged All-Terrain offers the triple-interface convenience of high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity (which is USB 1.1 backward compatible) along with both FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 interfaces. With this triple-interface functionality, along with the drive's driver-free and plug-and-play features, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets. The Rugged All-Terrain even comes with a USB power-sharing cable for low powered USB hubs/computers. (The Rugged All-Terrain requires no extra drivers for Windows XP/2000/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.)

This high-performance drive features a spin speed of 5400 rpm, an 8 MB cache, and a transfer rate of up to 800 Mbits per second via the FireWire 800 connection. Measuring a mere 3.5 x 1 x 5.7 inches (WxHxD) and weighing less than nine ounces, the Rugged All-Terrain is designed to travel and will fit easily in your briefcase or backpack. Take it with you on business trips and vacations, or use it for transferring files from one desktop computer to another.

Included with the drive are LaCie software bundles to enhance its performance and functionality, including LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (for Mac and PC) and SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac).

Easy-to-change and durable once on, they are made of the same quality rubber as the original bright orange Rugged sleeve. The optional set, which is sold separately, includes green-grey, blue-grey, and black bumpers.

5 out of 5 stars Love It-Best addition to a MPB   September 3, 2008
L. Green (SF, CA)
I have a two year old Mac Book Pro with a 100 gig hard drive inside of it and had been using an external Lacie D2 drive for bringing out to gigs (I store all of the audio samples/songs on an external drive). The problem is that it was too bulky and heavy and had a bulky power brick that I had to bring along, instantly adding unnecessary weight to my lap bag.
So I looked into the Lacie rugged drive and was a bit skeptical about it because it was a 5400rpm instead of the D2's 7200.
But I must say that I have been pleasantly suprized with the rugged drive. I have noticed little to none, audio performance issues. And it's light, small, and Bus powered via firewire 400 or 800. Awsome.
Let me say though. If you're a windows user with a pc laptop then I probably wouldn't recommend this because all pc laptops have the small firewire jack that is not capable of bus powering things, therefor you would have to buy an external power supply OR use the double usb cable hookup option which will take up two usb ports. Not optimal in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Lacie Rugged - Fantastic!   September 1, 2008
Noodlehead (Mountains of NY)
I had been looking for another portable hard drive - I have a few. I have some requirements that are not easy to satisfy. But lo! I just got my new "Lacie Rugged." 160 GB. (Windows or Mac - I use Macs.).
About an inch taller than a pack of cigarettes. About an inch thick
It has a rubber bumper-like casing so I think I could throw it at the television during bad commercials and have it bounce off without injury - to the Lacie.

Silliness aside, to my surprise, it came with four different types of cables and has four different options for connecting. Amazing. Nowadays, companies don't even provide one cable. It took me about a minute to connect and see it mount on my desktop. I can connect it via USB; Firewire-400 Firewire-800 (that's IEEE 1394 in the Windows world) and a fourth port that is a power supply if you need it. I don't on my desktop. But some laptops don't have the juice to power external drives just through their usb ports, so Lacie, brilliantly provided this fourth cable with a port for it, to boost power as needed. (But, again, not needed for me, maybe on my older laptop, haven't tried yet). It came with a bunch of free software on it - for both the Mac and for Windows. I then used my Macs built in Disk Utility to split it into two volumes. So now when I plug it in, I get two separate hard drives (I split the storage space). I even then created an encrypted disk image on one of the volumes to store private emails, files, etc. It all just works! Very refreshing and encouraging. Nice work, Lacie.

4 out of 5 stars The Perfect Workable Storage Solution   July 20, 2008
Ephraim Schum
The Good: Bought this as a means to add additional, workable storage for my Mac. Needed something that could back up large files quickly but still give me the ability to work off of the drive when needed. The fact that it is one of just a few drives out there that can accept many different kinds of connections (USB, Firewire 400, and most importantly fast Firewire 800) makes this drive perfect. I have yet to drop this thing but am told it is fine to drop from a height of about 3 feet. It is also designed very well. Just pretty to look at and the rubber protective skin leaves you with a feeling that this thing can be banged up a bit. Comes with all needed cables, most importantly the Firewire 800 cable which I have had trouble finding in brick-and-mortar stores.

The Not-So-Good: The drive can get somewhat hot so be sure that it has adequate space around it to "breathe". I put mine on top of something smaller like a decks of cards so that air can circulate to the underside, helping to keep it cooler. Wish it came with the extra protective skin options. Orange is nice but sometimes you just want something different.

I needed something that was light, rugged, didn't require an external power supply and didn't take up a lot of space.

This works perfectly!
