Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This powerful, compact, lightweight 600-dpi color scanner is combined with dynamic software to provide exceptional quality scanning and easy management of documents and photos. The DSmobile 600 is a direct replacement for the DSmobile USB but provides higher resolution, high-speed USB 2.0 interface, and additional software that will enhance and simplify your scanning needs.

Amazon.com Product Description
Weighing in at less than 12 ounces and measuring just 11 inches wide, the Pentax DSmobile lets you carry around all you need to scan everything from a business card to an 8.5 by 14 inch document. The scanner draws power from its USB interface so no clunky AC adapter is needed. Bring it along with you and you can instantly transmit a printed page via email, fax, or the web. The scanner has a hardware optical resolution of 300 dpi and the included OCR software automatically converts the document to editable text.

The scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to achieve its smaller volume and lighter weight, and also requires less power consumption and lower maintenance than a traditional CCD. The DSmobile has few moving parts, which promotes high reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. It consumes only 0.2 watt of power in standby mode and a maximum of 2.2 watts of power when scanning. The Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner is compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is backed by a 1-year warranty.

What's in the Box
DSmobile 600 scanner, leather case, 35-inch USB cable, user's manual, instllation guide, software CD, calibration card, and two 5x7-inch photo-scan sleeves.

4 out of 5 stars delightfully easy and convenient   September 6, 2008
Homeowners Inventory Registry (Oakland Twp., MI United States)
I have yet to use it in high volume but it ws easy to setup and use. The small size is great because I use it in the field.

4 out of 5 stars Getting rid of paper clutter   August 30, 2008
Cape Paddler (Cape Cod, MA)
I clip articles and recipes out of magazines and they hve piled up over the years. Since I am normally an organized person, I needed a way to save these but throw them out, too. This Pentax scanner has been the perfect answer. It is light weight and takes up little space, but really gets the job done. The program that comes with it allows you to set up separate files and then drag the scanned item over to the corresponding file in which to save it. Voila! End of mess!
Note: If you don't like the black of the unprinted part, just put a white blank sheet of paper through simultaneously behind the article being scanned.

5 out of 5 stars Great value, performance   August 28, 2008
Kitchen Monkey Boy
This scanner is definitely a price performer. There may be some things you'd wish for but remember, this is selling for under $130 so there's gonna be some compromises. For that price point, I think this might be a best value.

The things I like about it:
- very small form factor makes it easy to take along
- runs solely from a USB port - no external power supply
- simplicity
- quality of scans is great for documents
- speed of scans is good (not screaming fast, but good)

The things you may not like about it:
- the included software does the basics but not much else.
if you have other software (PaperPort, etc) you will be happy
- the resolution is not for high-res photo scanning. It does
a good job, but at 600 dpi it is what it is
- no sheet feeder. you have to feed documents one at a time
- single sided scan. you have to reverse and refeed doublesided docs

If the sheet feeder and doublesided scanning are a must-have, don't get this scanner. Get out your wallet and shell out the $300 for a SnapScan. If you can live without those things, you'll get a smaller form factor and save a couple hundred bucks.

1 out of 5 stars Bad QC from PENTAX, Good Customer Service from Amazon   August 13, 2008
Thomas E. Rigsbee
We received the product on time. Installed software and hooked up scanner, no joy. Scanner would not feed the paper into it at all. Called Amazon.com and they sent a replacement right away. Have not hooked up replacement yet.

I would not recommend buying this simply because you can get NO support from Pentax. Amazon. com has has been good, but Pentax support stinks.

2 out of 5 stars Does not work with Linux.   July 26, 2008

The product description indicates that this scanner works with Linux. It doesn't at all and I can't find evidence that anyone is working on making it work. Don't buy it if you run Linux (any Linux). It even had some problems working in Windows XP.
