Error message Error message Error message!!!!!! August 25, 2010 Aurora M. Long I mainly use this product as a scanner, occasionally using the print/copy functions, but overall I think I've only used enough ink in the last few years to have to replace the cartridges two or three times. (for INK USAGE.... had to replace FULL cartridges SEVERAL times now for the problems I will now cover.) Scanning is fine, kind of slow. Menu is annoying, takes too much button pushing for simple black-and-white copying or scanning. However, I got this system free when buying my Macintosh laptop so can't complain too much about something free being slow. and yes, the printing is SO slow... I go start myself a cup of coffee and when I come back it's done printing two pages. These issues of just plain old annoyance aren't the BIG problem with this item however. The *problem* is that it ALWAYS has freaking ERROR MESSAGES related to the stupid ink cartridges and/or printer head and when I called Canon, they told me the only thing I can do is go buy a *new* ink cartridge and/or printer head and "hope it works." They of course promised to refund me the cost of having to keep replacing full or mostly full cartridges... after I submit my claim, then mail in the old cartridge, then waited for the check in the mail... Wouldn't it just be easier to make something that *worked*?!?! The absolute WORST part of all of this is.... as I mentioned, I hardly ever use it to print. So if I only cared about the problems it makes while trying to print 3 times a year..... it would be at least that much less annoying. HOWEVER. ONE stupid glitch on your stupid magenta cartridge AND THE WHOLE THING *SHUTS DOWN*!!! Not a single function will work.. no scanning, not even just a simple black-and-white (which I use VERY often..) until I replace the offending cartridge so the start-up error message goes away!!!!! HATE IT!!!!!
Dead before age 3; Mediocre Prints June 26, 2010 Joel Cranford (La Vergne, TN) I purchased the Canon MP510 in August 2007, my first Canon and first multi-function printer. It died this week for no apparent reason, having sat in the same place for about a year (34 mos since it was purchased). During its lifespan it 'did the job' of printing satisfactorily. I rarely printed photos, and when I did, found the quality well below that of my previous Epson printers. Even black-on-white printing was substandard. The MP510 is an ink-guzzler, too. Scanning and copying were fine for our home purposes.
Generally, I love Canon products but the replacement will likely NOT be a Canon.
Does not hold up January 12, 2010 Patricia Brown (Bellingham, WA) I bought this printer for my daughter attending and college and liked it so much I bought one for myself. Neither of us used it on a regular basis and they both quit feeding paper at the same time - about 1-1/2 years later. Very frustrating since we both had just bought new ink.
And then it died. March 27, 2009 Rachel Fleishman (Seattlite) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a Mac user and every time I switch functions on this printer (i.e. to scan/copy), it needs to be reinstalled on the computer or it won't print again. After 2 years of ink-guzzling use, it has developed an error message implying it has a paper jam. It does not. My only option, per canon, it to take it to be repaired for $80 since it is out of warranty. And now I know why the world is full of so much electronics garbage; poor customer service and poor products that are not designed to last.
I will say, when it worked it printed nicely.
A hardy printer November 20, 2008 Anibeth (San Francisco, CA USA) I purchased my first Canon printer and decided on a MP 510 since the others had a fax built in, but are rather expensive and thought the MP 510 would be a simple, but wise purchase. The printer works well, doesn't smear the ink and the feed was consistent. The only problem with the first MP 510 printer was that the scanner cover somehow detached itself and I couldn't reattach the scanner cover back to the scanner bed. Therefore, I called Canon and explained to them, of the problem and because of the distance involved to bring the printer in and of the expired warranty, the Canon representative suggested an exchange so they sent me a replacement printer. The replacement printer arrived in excellent condition and I didn't have to pay anything before and after I got a replacement printer, which to me, is a very positive outcome out of my dealing with a simple defective product. I returned the first printer to Canon and so far, I haven't have any problems at all with the replacement printer. Thank you, Canon!
