1 out of 5 stars defective ink cartridges= expensive paperweight   December 31, 2008
K. Regan (Charlestown, RI USA)

I have had 3 incidents of this printer failing to recognize newly opened cartridges. The printer will give you the "out of ink status" and will not function at all at that point. I called Epson and was told that the cause was a faulty computer chip in certain ink cartridges (matte black, magenta were my culprits) and that they were working on it. The printer is only good if you have cartridges that work and Epson is knowingly selling defective cartridges. If, like myself, you miss a deadline because you naturally assumed you were being sold something that worked, you are out of luck. I will be sending this printer and all my useless cartridges back.

Update:
Was told that I could not get my money back, only another printer. This solves nothing. I was told to call Customer Relations (another toll call). After this person spoke with her higher ups, she admitted that there was a problem with a "batch" of ink and that they corrected it and they would send me more ink. If you notice, the first review of this ink problem on this site was back in August. That is a pretty long batch run wouldn't you say? I asked for verification of the problem and the date it was resolved. She told me she couldn't give me that. I told her about the missed deadline and that I could not accept jobs with this printer unless she could guarantee that I would not experience this problem again. She told me she could not do that and then graciously told me there are no guarantees in life. Remember, they knew about this at least back in August and I just bought my defective ink therefore they have been selling this ink knowing it was defective and this is the response I get from Epson. I told her I wanted to speak to someone who could verify the resolve date of this problem and I am expecting a call back.

update:
Rep calls and thinks I am concerned with tracking my new ink. I explain (again) the whole story and that I was waiting for verification of the resolution date of the ink cartridges so I could make a paper trail of my communication. He says this sounds like a satisfaction problem and he will forward to correct department and get back. This is the fourth department I have been handed to. Where is the "we tried to *&^% you and got caught so we will give you back your money" department?

update:
just got my replacement cartridge for the two defective matte blacks. They sent me a red cartridge.

I will never buy Epson again because they cannot be trusted. I understand about technology but this was not about bad technology this was about knowingly selling bad technology. How they handled this problem shows they were more concerned about their bottom line than their customers. Ethically they should have informed the customer or recalled the printer, inks or both.
If you must have this printer be prepared to have a supply of cartridges on hand and make a lot of toll calls to get replacements. Also, the roll paper feature is terrible. You must have it perfectly square to feed and it is very difficult to cut canvas square due to the fabric grain. Expect a lot of wasted hours and wasted canvas. I will update if I hear back about the exact date the ink was resolved.

5 out of 5 stars How my Epson R1900 helps Costco   December 27, 2008

Epson R1900 Large Format Photo Printer

The R1900 is a great printer.

Even though this is the first hardware review I've ever done, I guess I should be more complete.

I'm not a pro photographer, but I take a lot of pride in the photos I turn out. I have been using an HP C6150 ... which has been good but confining. Letter size is pretty much the size limit, and color prints produce somewhat blotchy blacks. So, I've been doing a lot of my printing at Costco.

While Costco does great retail printing, sometimes it is hard to get just what you want, and the choice of papers is limiting. Plus there are those shots you would be much better not sending out to the box store to be done.

Installing on my iMac was painless. The one thing that took me by pleasant surprise was discovering that the R1900 has a second USB port for connecting to a second printer (my laptop!).

My first print in the R1900 actually took me off guard. The colors struck me as a lot more vibrant and the print glossier than I had been used to. So, I printed the same picture on the same paper on my old printer. Side by side the comparison was remarkable and more than confirmed my initial reaction.

I had, of course, read that Epson had made this a great glossy printer. So, my next print was on high quality matte paper. The results were not disappointing at all.

While I would never put anything but Epson ink into Epson printers, I've tried several brands of paper. Results on Red River 50lb Premium Matte were great. And prints on Costco's premium glossy photo paper match the output on Epson's own paper at a fraction of the price.

A couple of things: The R1900 goes through the glossy coating ink cartridge rather quickly. But the good news is that the glossy coating comes in boxes of 4 cartridges. The other thing is that this is a large machine. But it has to be to print on paper as large as it does - up to 13"x19" plus roll paper up to 13" wide.

The bottom line: With the R1900 at home, Costco is now selling me more paper but fewer prints!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   December 24, 2008
Christy N. Butler Photos (Berkshires)
-I've been mainly printing panoramic photos since I first received my R1900. Outstanding, terrific and absolutely beautiful images. Easy set-up and flawless performance 1 hour from box to 1st pano. Having read many of the 3 star or lower reviews I was alightly apprehensive to buy, but I didn't buy into their horror stories. Have printed over 70 panorama prints 8.3"x36" in pass month, have been able to get 10 prints off the Epson 32' roll of luster or glossy paper. The panaramic mode worked great! About 8 minutes print "best" mode. Printed 11-12 prints before starting change ink cartridges. Gloss Opt went 1st when using glossy paper only. Photo black next, then cyn, yellow, magenta. Photo blk appears to be the most used ink. Figuring out that one 36" pano print equals (3) 8.5"X11" prints that's close to 30-35+ prints...better than my Canon which averaged 25 prints before I had to change a cartridge.
One quirk I learned was that if you run out during printing a pano, consider that print scrap for line where it tapered off and came back after changing is "there". Another quirk ... have extra ink cartridge on hand. When ink runs out the "ink alarm" prevents any other action or movement of paper til that low ink cartridge is replaced. My advise: Use correct Epson ink ONLY! Don't buy this unit if your looking to print 4"x6" mostly. This unit is for those with excellant images to begin with. Going to larger images will show your lack of tripod and other mistakes quickly...garbage in garbage out.
Good Luck. T.Y. CNB

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT BUY EPSON!!!!   December 13, 2008

I really wish I'd read this before I bought my R1900 a few months ago. Not only does it use ink at a horrific rate, more than half the time the new, Epson replacement cartridge isn't recognized. I've called Epson several times and they are really helpful and friendly and are very quick to send me a replacement cartridge when i tell them i've already gone through the troubleshooting procedures (I've become an expert by now). 3 days ago it happened again. Cyan ran out 3/4 of the way in printing a 13x19 print for a job i needed the next day. Neither of the remaining TWO cartridges will work. It wasted the print and the job didn't get done. I am going to demand a refund on the piece of junk. DO NOT BUY EPSON PRINTERS unless you have deep pockets for ink. The ink for the R1900 can only be purchased, as far as I can tell, from Epson. They don't even want the defective carts back for review which tells me a whole lot about their quality control.

Purchased in Sept 08
9/23: ordered ink
10/1: called tech support and ordered Cyan replaced
10/9: called tech support and ordered Gloss replaced
11/3: called tech support and ordered Yellow replaced
12/9: ran out of Cyan (two replacement carts not recognized.
Will be talking with Epson Monday about a refund on printer.
NEVER AGAIN WITH EPSON.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous output   December 11, 2008
Trevor Goodchild (The City of Angels)
The prints this thing makes are *OUTSTANDING*. I have not had any trouble with cartridges or although it does take quite a few (8 or 9) IIRC. They are also difficult to find as this is a new printer but I believe they'll become more common.

Cons:
* Antiquated epson software that looks like it belongs in OS 9
* Didn't come with a printed manual.
* Uses ink/gloss optimized quickly (but photo printing is expensive -- period)

Pros:
* The output is GORGEOUS
* An 8.5 x 11 takes under a minute to complete.
* Works out of the box
* Did I mention the output is gorgeous?
